Roger Crandall, Highway Superintendent
The Malta Democratic Committee has put long-time Malta Highway Superintendent Roger Crandall, a Republican, on the Democratic line this November. Roger, a former contractor, was elected in 2009 and has been highway superintendent in Malta for the past 13 years.
Roger Crandall’s number one priority is improving and maintaining the safety of Malta’s highways. Roger has been instrumental in upgrading Malta’s highway safety standards, "I changed them because the roads were falling apart and because of our growth they were getting more traffic," he said. "Thirty years ago, Malta was a rural area and now we have all this infrastructure — sewer, water, stormwater capture, sidewalks, and we needed to change and evolve."
The Malta Democratic Party takes its role of endorsing and running candidates very seriously. We do not run candidates for public office just because we are Democrats and they are Republicans. Roger came to the Malta Democratic Committee and asked for their endorsement. He has done a great job helping to improve the road standards in the Town so the committee agreed to put Roger on the Democratic line.
“In 2009 they came knocking on my door and asked if I was interested in running for highway superintendent. I said I lived in the town since I was three, so I will do it for the community. And here I am. I ran in 2009 and took office in January 2010.”
As the highway superintendent Roger is responsible for maintaining the town's 147.4 lane miles of road. In addition to maintaining and plowing the roads, the highway department also responsible for maintaining stormwater management systems, repairing, replacing and installing road signs, and fueling stations for the Malta ambulance and fire department, Saratoga County Water Authority, and all town departments with vehicles.
Roger has been married to his wife, Sandra, for 40 years. "I'm proud of the job he does," she said. "He works well with the other towns, police and fire departments. The job was made for him and I love seeing him succeed." Roger is a member of the Saratoga County Highway Superintendents Association and the New York State County Highway Superintendents Association.
